September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month – Zeeva Clinic

September 23
21:35 2019

Did you know Congress in 2010 designated September as Blood Cancer awareness month? It was done to bring attention to leukaemia and lymphoma.

Well, every month, 14,000 people are diagnosed with cancer. But with the advancement in technology, the doctors can detect the disease earlier.

These statistics are quite scary and can become a false sense of security. There is a variety of leukaemia and lymphoma whose facts and figures are not displayed; for example, there are a promising 86% five-year survival chances for Hodgkin lymphoma.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is more of a lethal form of blood cancer, and the survival rate has grown considerably. Since the 1990s and even today, approximately 20,140 deaths have occurred.

Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) has several subtypes which affect blood and bone marrow, and it is expected to kill 10,000 people in the coming years. The patients over 60 years, does not respond well to AML treatment and their five-year survival rate is just 26%.

Although the reasons are not entirely understood, the family history of the patient can help the doctor to diagnose the cause. Leukaemia is also linked to exposure to high doses of radiation, the chemical benzene or a very particular gene mutation. There is a subtype in leukaemia, i.e. chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML). Chronic myelogenous leukaemia is a part of DNA in which one chromosome moves to another chromosome.

This sudden change results in the bone marrow making an enzyme, and it causes too many stem cells to become white blood cells.

There are some risk factors which are similar to leukaemias such as benzene, radiation exposure, and family history. But, previous viral infection such as Epstein Barr and Hepatitis C can increase the chances of developing the situation.

There are various oncologists, like Dr Vikas Goswami, who have dedicated their lives in helping the patients to fight cancer.

Well, the key is early detection, identifying the signs of disease, and having proper treatment. Some of the symptoms of lymphoma are persistent fatigue, night sweats, and unexpected weight loss. The primary symptom is the painless swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, and groin.

Hence, it is essential that in case you are facing any symptoms, you should consult an oncologist and eradicate blood cancer successfully.
