Toast: Short Speeches, Big Impact by Eddie Rice guides readers on what might be the biggest social minefield of all: the public toast. Naturally, Rice addresses the most widely known toast and how to do it well for the bride and groom who have entrusted you with this honor at their wedding, but the real gems are the guidance provided for the toasts that few consider. He also steps beyond meaningful toasts and walks us through actual speech territory. Broken down into two distinct and interconnected parts, we are first taught about the process of writing toasts, from the terror of being asked in the first place through to the week before the big day. Part two starts with advice on the toast’s delivery and then moves into speeches, complete with examples and solid tips.

It has been at least 25 years since the last time I stood in front of a mirror with my hairbrush as a microphone and graciously accepted the Grammy award for a song I could never sing because I cannot and never have been able to sing. However, it’s only been four months since I was a maid of honor and, I have to tell you, I would have been much better prepared and delivered a far more impressive toast had Eddie Rice’s book Toast entered my world beforehand. The book is written in a straightforward manner that is both easy to understand and encouraging. For me, the most helpful for future toasts is definitely the list of prompts that come up during the brainstorming phase, and the templates Rice provides that follow. The information is also well directed for the modern reader and gives wonderfully helpful suggestions such as watching YouTube toasts and speeches, which I had never considered. Overall, this is an exceptional book that is insightful, helpful, and very highly recommended.”
