Michigan Student Group Welcomes Ramadan with Favorite Childhood Celebrities

ANN ARBOR, MI – Apr 13, 2021 – The University of Michigan student-founded non-profit Paani Project welcomed the first day of Ramadan with a nostalgic video featuring many favorite childhood celebrities.

Paani carried out this project to thank its donors and hopes that the positive response would encourage content creators, artists, musicians, actors, and producers to connect with Muslim-Americans. The responses are an example of Muslim-Americans’ desire to be positively represented in pop culture.

The Paani Ramadan Welcome video features: Lindsay Lohan, Phill Lewis, Drake Bell, Jennifer Stone, Maria Canals-Baron, Tony Hawk, Kyle Massey, Jason Earle, and Jesse McCartney.

In a statement, Paani co-founder Sikander ‘Sonny’ Khan said:

“This idea really came as a wholesome and fun way to say thank you to Paani’s audience since most of them are also Muslim-Americans who grew up watching Disney shows.

“We hope the positive responses show just how much Muslim-Americans are craving positive mainstream representation. That’s why our favorite celebrities saying ‘Eid Mubarak’ sparks waves. That’s why people who don’t even know what the UFC is love Khabib, and why when Kyrie Irving tweets verses from the Quran, it warms so many hearts.”

Paani is encouraging people to donate so the organization can continue helping families who are affected by the water crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Paani is a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in 2017 by four University of Michigan students to address water accessibility in Pakistan. Paani, which means water in Urdu, works with community partners and institutions in the United States and Pakistan to drive sustainable, evidence-based interventions that primarily focus on alleviating clean water inaccessibility, advocating for gender equity, and addressing a variety of pressing health disparities.

The humanitarian organization has built over 1800 wells. Recently, Paani distributed over 2.5 million meals across Pakistan and sent families hygiene products such as hand sanitizer, medicated masks, soap, and cleaning supplies as part of a COVID-19 relief campaign. In the past, Paani also dedicated a well to Lakers player LeBron James for his philanthropic work off the court.
