“Friendship comes in all kinds of packages. Even pets have friends. While it’s not usual, it does happen that a cat befriends a dog. Luckily for Calypso, an alley cat did take an interest in the Welsh terrier. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have survived the night as a stray dog. Calypso came from a good home. Young Dylan, Calypso’s owner, took good care of him. But, being a puppy and full of energy, it didn’t take much to send Calypso running after a rat who stole one of his kibbles, ending up in a boxcar just as the door slammed shut and the train pulled away. That’s how Calypso ended up in the big city, trying to live on the street. The Welsh terrier made other friends, too and through these friends ended up in Maple Falls. He still wanted to go home to Dylan, but he had also made some very nice friends with another dog and a rat. You see, Calypso was a very friendly little dog.

“Montgomery C. Floyd’s early chapter book, Adventures of Calypso: Welsh Terrier, is a fun and adventurous “Lassie” type of story. It’s fast-paced as the plot develops with lots of excitement. The only time Calypso appears to keep out of trouble is when he’s asleep. The adventure takes the Welsh terrier to the big city and he learns about life on the street and the dangers it presents – angry tomcats, dogcatchers, and more. The story is told in the third person narrative following the adventures of Calypso. There is a dialogue between the animals and, marginally, amongst human caregivers. The author has a knack of providing sufficient description to set the scene and make the reader feel as if he/she is in the scene and part of the adventure. A great animal story with lots of references to the importance of friendships, especially between those who are different.”
